Mercedes Schlapp's role as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy one. The White House's strategic communications advisor Mercedes Schlapp is required to face a variety of challenges. These include a President who also has the director of his own communications and a variety of legal battles that may disrupt the communications strategy. But through it all Schlapp has stayed focussed on the task that she has been assigned, and is working closely with the White House's political as well as legislative affairs and policy shops, as well in the larger communication operation for policy-related rollouts. She has to deal with a president that acts as his own communications director, multiple legal battles which could disrupt the strategy of communication for the administration and a number of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own controversies. Schlapp has kept her eye on the target, and has been coordinating the implementation of policy with White House staff from the department of legislative and political affairs and the policy shop, as well as broader communication. So far, her primary focus is on issues like safety in schools, the opioid epidemic, trade, infrastructure and other related topics. The current position she holds doesn't require any contact with journalists. But, back in March, her name was floated as a person who could take over Hope Hicks at the Communications Director position. This fight was ugly. Schlapp's close ally, Tony Sayegh as well as an opponent who is also named Tony began fighting during the media coverage. Schlapp said that after that the Washington Examiner had published an article with negative comments about Sayegh's character, she called Sayegh in a private chat.
